THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN PHOTOGRAPHY MASTERCLASS

We Will Have Been Young
History

The Southeast Asian Photography Masterclass was a programme that was born from a need to capacity build local photographers through a programme that provided expert mentorship over a period of 12 months. Through the programme some of the region’s finest emerging photographers will have an opportunity to develop their skills as photographers, thinkers, activists and representatives of their communities. The programme will help elevate their talent even further in developing important work that is both timely and captures the zeitgeist of the time we live in.

This programme came about as an idea by Vignes Balasingam in 2013 to enable a cross cultural as well as a knowledge and skills exchange between Southeast Asia and the rest of the world. The ideation to the programme would be developed through the immense knowledge and ground-work gained through the OBSCURA Festival programmes. In 2015 Vignes Balasingam discussed this idea with Mr. Rolf Stehle of Goethe-Institut Malaysia who encouraged the further development of the programme. With the help of Jörg Brüggemann of Ostkreuz Photographers Agency (Berlin), the programme enjoyed further refinement. In 2016, with the support of the Goethe-Institut through Mr. Stehle, the programme became a reality.
